Arnica Montana

Arnica montana is a European flowering plant with a long history in herbal and homeopathic writing. This page separates that history from what evidence can establish about safety and effectiveness.

Educational only: This page does not diagnose injuries or recommend treatment. Suspected fractures, head injuries, severe pain, or worsening symptoms need qualified medical assessment.

The plant and its history

Arnica montana, sometimes called mountain arnica or leopard's bane, is a perennial plant native to mountainous parts of Europe. Historical homeopathic materia medica commonly associates it with bruising, soreness, and physical injury. Those traditional descriptions document a system of belief; they are not proof that a preparation treats tissue damage.

Homeopathic preparations and evidence

Homeopathic products may be diluted to different degrees, and products sold under similar names are not necessarily equivalent. A historical remedy match or a highly diluted label does not establish clinical benefit. Reliable evidence has not established homeopathy as an effective treatment for health conditions. Do not use a remedy in place of assessment or evidence-based care.

Safety matters

Undiluted arnica and some herbal products can be harmful if swallowed and may irritate the skin. Product ingredients and quality vary. Do not apply products to broken skin or use them around the eyes unless a qualified clinician advises it. If an injury is serious, seek medical care rather than relying on arnica.
